Case Competitions: Case competitions are a great way to get to know what it’s like to work in a particular line of work during the academic semester. We encourage students of all years to consider participating.

Unilever Future Leaders’ League

The Unilever Future Leaders’ League (FLL) is our global business case competition, giving you a chance to create real impact with our top brands. Each year, the best and brightest university students from all over the world join FLL, designing innovative solutions to real business challenges. The preliminary case will be released on 3 July 2017. Learn more here!

Behavioural Exchange 2017 conference
Civil Service College (CSC) will be organising the Behavioural Exchange 2017 conference from 29 – 30 June. To encourage more active participation from the BI research and practitioners community, CSC will be giving out the Practitioner’s Award. This award is to recognise original and effective application of behavioural insights (BI) to any 3 of the policy challenges submitted by Singapore government agencies:

  1. How can we get more young adults to be physically active?
  2. Can over-leveraged borrowers be nudged to take action and prevent credit suspension?
  3. How can BI be used to prevent people from falling prey to internet love scams?

Check out www.bx2017.org/practitioners-award for more details. This is a pen and paper exercise, and would not require participants to conduct extensive fieldwork. We would like to encourage students to participate, and contribute their ideas to public policy.

The deadline for the Practitioner’s Award has now been extended to 28 April 2017! Each winning entry will receive a FREE ticket to the Behavioural Exchange 2017.

Making A Change & Overcoming Adversity
The Silver Ribbon Singapore will be hosting a motivational talk featuring special speakers from Campus Peer Support Youth, United Nations Association of Singapore and Bakery Wellness. Come and be inspired by these individuals who will be discussing hot topics such as “Rising up, be the Change!”, “Volunteerism for all the wrong reasons” and “My Journey through Resilience”. How Will You Make An Impact?
Community TeamWorks is Goldman Sachs’ global volunteer initiative that allows its employees to take a day out of the office and spend it volunteering with local nonprofit organizations. In 2016, more than 25,000 Goldman Sachs people, family and friends from offices around the world partnered with more than 900 nonprofit organizations on a diverse array of community service projects. The team will be offering a group of university students the opportunity to take part in one of the selected projects and experience this unique initiative. Join Goldman Sachs professionals, and spend one day giving back to the community while learning more about the unique culture that Goldman Sachs has to offer.

Young CSR Leaders Award (YCSRLA) Competition
The CDL-GCNS Young CSR Leaders Award is a case-competition that promotes thought leadership amongst our future business leaders to embrace Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) principles into a company’s business strategy and practices. The rare opportunity to work on the sustainability strategy of large organizations such as Hilton Worldwide, Marina Bay Sands, and the National Environment Agency attracted a record high participation of 101 teams in 2016, with our very own Yale-NUS students earning first prize. Students can form a team of 3-6 and register by 17 Feb 2017. Learn more here.

UOB-NUS Case Competition 2016
Back for its 8th edition here in Singapore, the UOB-NUS Case Competition is now accepting registrations till 20 August 2016! Students in teams of four get to compete with fellow like-minded peers to solve business problems and stand a chance to win grand prizes worth up to $3000. Bain & Company Case Challenge 2016
Bain & Company is now accepting registrations for their case challenge competition till 24 August 2016! Students in teams of four get to play against other teams to solve real-life, contemporary business issues. The competition period is from 26 August to 09 September. Semi-finalists will be invited for an intimate networking session and the Top 3 winning teams will get to connect one-on-one with Bain Consultants to discuss future career opportunities. Nielsen Case Competition
Are you interested in bringing uncommon insights to the world? Yale-NUS students that are year 2 and above are invited to participate in the Nielsen Case Competition in teams of 3-4 with students at Yale-NUS or any other Singaporean university. The Asian Trade Centre will host a panel event at Yale-NUS with industry professionals to discuss what the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) means for the digital economy and trade. The panel will debate on the future and challenges of the digital economy from both government and industry point of views, and includes: David Weller (Google’s Global Head of Trade Policy), Andrea Phua (Ministry of Trade & Industry’s Deputy Director, North America & Europe Division), and Teck Yong Lim (Shopee’s Regional Head of Operations). Becoming a Wordsmith
Cheryl Tan is a New York-based Singaporean journalist and author. Her just-published novel is “Sarong Party Girls” and she is the author of the acclaimed “A Tiger In The Kitchen: A Memoir of Food & Family“ as well as the editor of the fiction anthology, “Singapore Noir.” Cheryl has written for the Wall Street Journal, In Style magazine and the Baltimore Sun. Her stories have also appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Food & Wine, National Geographic, Foreign Policy, Marie Claire, Newsweek, Bloomberg Businessweek, and The Straits Times among other places.
Join us and the Writers’ Centre for a Rector’s Tea where she will read from her new novel (currently #2 on Singapore’s fiction best seller list) and also talk about her story and journey as a writer, which began when she moved to the US at 18 to attend Northwestern University.  Aspiring writers will appreciate advice on how to build and sustain a career when starting out.

Journey of An Entrepreneur: From Yale to Silicon Valley
Join us for an evening with Mr David Thompson, the man responsible for all things related to security, privacy, and public policy at Grand Rounds, a healthcare IT startup in Silicon Valley. David is the former General Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer of Reputation.com, and also served as a transactional and privacy attorney at the Los Angeles firm Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP. He has spoken nationally on Internet and consumer privacy in forums such as the CBS Early Show, ABA’s 2012 National Conference on Technology, and Booz Allen’s Identity Technology conference. He graduated cum laude from Yale University and Stanford Law School, and clerked for the Hons. Chief Judge Alex Kozinski of the Ninth Circuit as well as Justice Scalia of the Supreme Court.

It’s Recess Week at Yale-NUS, but our campus continues to encourage conversations about diversity and community.  Join the U.S. Embassy and CIPE in welcoming to campus Dr. Yolanda T. Moses,  Professor of Anthropology and most recently as Associate Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Excellence at the University of California, Riverside.
Dr. Moses’ research focuses on the origins and sustainability of social inequality systems and practices in complex societies through the use of comparative ethnographic and survey methods.  She has explored gender and class disparities in the Caribbean, East Africa and in the United States.  More recently, her research has focused on issues of diversity and change in universities and colleges in the United States, India, Europe and South Africa.
In addition to hearing from Dr. Moses, we will be welcoming representatives from governments, industry, and non-profits to engage in a wide-ranging discussion on diversity and inclusion in Singapore.  Come mingle with prospective employers, internship partners, and volunteer organizations to hear more about what diversity means in their contexts.

How does business writing differ from academic writing? How should I participate in meetings when I’m the youngest person in the room? Are there any professional etiquette items I should note before starting on Day 1? How can I make an impact with my manager or team to get the most out of an internship?

Transitioning from the classroom to the workplace isn’t intuitive, but something you can prepare for. Join us for one of two sessions on 19 or 20 April, to prepare for your upcoming internship or job. You’ll pick up some pointers for communication and etiquette, but most of all have the opportunity to practice in this interactive session. All students pursuing an internship this summer are required to attend one of two sessions. Please RSVP for ONE session that you can attend in entirety. The J.P. Morgan Asset Management Challenge puts you right in the middle of the action. Through a hypothetical case study, you’ll find out what it takes to work as an Analyst in Asset Management.
Students in teams of 4-5 people will compete with the brightest around the region. You’ll learn through personal mentoring by senior leaders. Selected finalists will have the chance to be fast-tracked to interview for a full-time or internship position. The competition is open to students graduating in 2017 and 2018.

Application period: February 29 – March 20, 2016. The original deadline has been extended to Sunday 20 March.

Curious to know more about the world of commercial publishing?  William Frucht began his career as a South East Asia specialist conducting biological research in Thailand, moved to New York to pursue a career in commercial publishing, and began his role as Executive Editor at Yale University Press in 2008.  In his role, he examines the social implications of economic ideas, the current state of U.S. politics and where it is taking us, and certain aspects of U.S. political history.  When describing his work as editor, he wrote, “My authors ask troubling questions, propose dangerous new ideas, or attempt to clear away the fog of mythology that prevents a clear view of the past.”  He specifically edits the Yale Series in Economics and Financial History, the Yale Law Library Series in Legal History and Reference, the Henry L. Stimson Lectures Series, and the Yale-Templeton Series Foundational Questions in Science.
