Summer Study Abroad

Santander International Experience Scholarship funded by Santander Universities

Background

Through its Santander Universities Global Division, Banco Santander has collaborated with universities for more than 15 years on a unique global initiative which distinguishes it from other national and international banks and financial institutions. The bank supports the higher education sector in areas such as teaching and research, international cooperation, knowledge and technology transfer, entrepreneurial initiatives, student mobility and innovation. Santander Universities Global Division maintains a stable alliance with over 1,040 universities worldwide.

The Santander International Experience Scholarship will support up to one hundred students, identified by the College, for international exchanges, language study, internships and opportunities where they can make a meaningful contribution to a local community. These scholarships will be awarded over five years. Preference will be given to students studying Spanish language and culture, as well as those participating in programmes in Spain and Latin America. Scholarships are available at SGD $8,500 per student.

Rationale

“The limits of my language,” writes Ludwig Wittgenstein, “mean the limits of my world.” Because the worlds we inhabit (and can speak of) are indeed bounded by the languages we know, and because a liberal arts education aims to cultivate global leaders, leading scholars, and responsible citizens capable of moving nimbly between diverse worlds, Yale-NUS strives to be a place where the study of foreign languages is vigorously encouraged and supported.

Spanish is the official or primary language of 20 countries on four continents with a total population of over 400 million. It is the third most spoken language in the world, and with the rise of several Latin American economies in recent decades, Spanish has gained prominence as a language of business. While Spanish is less commonly studied in Singapore, Yale-NUS College offers students a unique opportunity to begin their Spanish language studies on campus. To complement and strengthen our offerings in Spanish, CIPE is pleased to announce the Santander International Experience Scholarship to fund students on full-immersion language programmes over the summer.

Programming

In order to receive the scholarship, students must apply directly – and gain admission – to one of the following programmes approved by Yale-NUS faculty and administrators:

Of this list, CIEE, Spanish Studies Abroad, and the Giralda Center offer beginning or advanced beginning level instruction; IES Abroad requires at least one year of college-level instruction. Other programmes may be added to this list in the upcoming months.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Full-time enrolled Yale-NUS students in good academic and disciplinary standing are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Successful applicants will demonstrate the following in a 300-400 word essay:

  • How and why study in the chosen programme fits into their academic, professional, or personal development
  • Clear rationale for why they must pursue the course abroad instead of at Yale-NUS
  • Plan to carry learning forward through further study or application of skills/knowledge gained
  • Ability to serve as a good ambassador for Yale-NUS College; adaptability, flexibility
  • Intent to bring learning back to Yale-NUS College and share with the community
  • Essays must be clear, well-written and grammatically correct
