The Santander International Experience Scholarship will support up to one hundred students, identified by the College, for international exchanges, language study, internships and opportunities where they can make a meaningful contribution to a local community. These scholarships will be awarded over five years. Preference will be given to students studying Spanish language and culture, as well as those participating in programmes in Spain and Latin America. Scholarships are available for up to SGD 8,500 per student.
“The limits of my language,” writes Ludwig Wittgenstein, “mean the limits of my world.” In order to cultivate students capable of navigating diverse cultures in an interconnected world, Yale-NUS strives to be a place where the study of foreign languages is vigorously encouraged and supported.
Spanish is the official or primary language of 20 countries on four continents with a total population of over 400 million. It is the third most spoken language in the world, and with the rise of several Latin American economies in recent decades, Spanish has gained prominence as a language of business. Yale-NUS College offers students a unique opportunity to begin their Spanish language studies on campus while the Santander International Experience Scholarship is available to fund students on full-immersion language programmes over the summer.
In order to receive the scholarship, students must apply directly – and gain admission – to one of the following programmes approved by Yale-NUS faculty and administrators:
Of this list, CIEE, Spanish Studies Abroad, and the Giralda Center offer beginner or advanced beginner level instruction; IES Abroad requires at least one year of college-level instruction.
Full-time enrolled Yale-NUS students in good academic and disciplinary standing are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Priority consideration will be given to students applying for programs above the beginner level. Students who have not previously studied Spanish must enrol in Spanish 1 during Semester 2 and successfully complete it prior to starting their summer programme. Failure to enrol in or complete the course could result in withdrawal of the scholarship offer.
Successful applicants will demonstrate the following in a 200-300 word essay:
