A couple of important notes about expectations and health and safety follows, so that you can make the decisions that are best for you and have a safe and stimulating summer experience.
We have selected our partner institutions and programs carefully with the health, safety and quality of experience of our students paramount in our considerations. Through site visits, due diligence, building relationships directly, and using recognized third party providers, CIPE has made our best effort to place every selected student with a partner who is committed to providing a safe, successful and meaningful experience for a Yale-NUS student. Our partners include a wide range of internal and external parties in over 29 countries and are comprised of universities, public entities, private sector organizations (profit and non-profit), and faculty employers. As such, the terms of employment and local conditions of placements may vary widely.
Most established relationships that Yale-NUS has with external institutions are quite new. We have briefed all our partners on our goals and the quality of our students but it is inevitable that there will be a learning curve for all stakeholders involved – CIPE, the host organization and the student. Often with internships and other such placements, it can take several years to refine a partnership to where things work smoothly. Please bear this in mind when considering opportunities. Of course, there is ample learning along the way and the insights from the challenges of these pioneering experiences can be just as valuable in preparing you for life after college (perhaps more!)
Challenges and Risks
It is important that you and your family understand the challenges of a placement and the risks involved in participating in such opportunities, particularly those that involve overseas travel. These risks include the possibility of social and political upheaval, natural disasters and terrorism activities.
In addition, health risks may be substantially greater overseas, and sanitation and medical facilities may be of a far lower standard than those in Singapore. Furthermore, when traveling internationally or taking public transportation in your host country, you should be aware that safety standards may be far lower than those to which you are accustomed to in Singapore or at home. This is particularly the case with motorscooters and motorcycles. Although they are frequently used in many parts of Asia, you are expressly asked to avoid driving them or riding on them as passengers. Traffic is often far more chaotic than in Singapore and serious motorbike accidents are all too common.
It is part of your responsibility to understand these risks and ensure that you have taken the appropriate measures to prepare, including receiving the necessary vaccinations (plan ahead as some vaccination schedules require more than one month between shots), following the guidelines from CIPE to get your visa (if one is required), familiarizing yourself with the orientation materials provided by CIPE and your programme or employer, and reading the relevant Ministry of Foreign Affairs Public Announcements for your host country. Please also read this information for any other country or region to which you wish to travel.
On the Ground
Upon your arrival in your host location (if outside of Singapore), you must also register with the nearest Embassy or Consulate of your home country, keep abreast of travel advisories or other pertinent information made available by the MFA, and keep in continuing contact with your family and CIPE (by email or otherwise agreed upon method). We also expect that you will, wherever possible, avoid situations which have the potential to become politically volatile or otherwise dangerous such as demonstrations, rallies, and large crowds.
**IMPORTANT** We also ask that you let CIPE know in advance if you plan to travel outside of your assigned placement by sending us an email with your itinerary. The purpose of this is so that we know how to reach you in case of emergency.
The CIPE office in Singapore will provide immediate support to students encountering difficulties including visa and passport assistance as well as assistance in managing medical emergencies and insurance concerns. Staff can be contacted by email or telephone 24 hours a day.
