Are you an aspiring writer interested in taking a summer workshop? Hone your skills and expand your writing portfolio at an internationally acclaimed writing programme overseas. Be inspired from eminent instructors and exchange ideas with fellow writers, who will help you see your work through a different lens.

Terms and Conditions

Programme Support. In 2017, five students will receive support of up to SGD $5000 each to attend one of the writing programs listed below. Selected students will be expected to cover visa, airfare and personal expenses on their own. Limited need-based funding for airfare is available.

Receiving Writing Fellowship Programme funding is contingent upon being accepted into one of the writing programmes below, which must end by 6 August 2017. Selected students must provide evidence of the items for which they plan to use the funding.

Eligibility. Full-time students of Yale-NUS College in their first, second or third year of study are eligible to apply. Past participants in the Writing Fellowship Programme are not eligible.

Applicants are required to have taken at least one writing course at Yale-NUS. An exception will be made for first-year students applying for the 2017 Writing Fellowship Programme.

Application Deadline: 1 February 2017

Application Instructions. Submit your application through Symplicity, including the following materials:
– Your CV/resume (required by default in the system)
– The 2017 Writing Fellowship Application Form
– A portfolio of up to 10 pages of prose or 5 poems, or a mix of both (up to 10 pages total). Submit your portfolio as one PDF file and enter your name only on the first (cover) page.

Selection Criteria. CIPE and the Writers’ Centre will consider the following when evaluating applications:
– Writing sample quality
– At least one writing course taken at Yale-NUS (required for 2017, with the exception of freshman applicants)
– Reasons to pursue the chosen writing programme(s)
– Potential for growth
– Previous application to the Writing Fellowship Programme and action taken since then.

Results Notification: Late February 2017. Recipients will have one week after notification to confirm their spot.

After Confirmation: Confirmed Writing Fellows will be required to consult with a staff member at the Writers’ Centre to identify the most suitable writing programme for their experience level and goals.

Post-Programme: Writing Fellows who successfully complete their chosen writing programmes will be expected to lead workshops for their peers upon returning to Yale-NUS, similar to the ones that they attended. Workshops can be co-facilitated with Writers’ Centre staff.

Writing Programme Options

Writing Fellowship Programme support can be used towards attendance costs for one of the writing programmes below (housing, tuition, local transport and living expenses). The support will usually cover most or all of the associated programme costs; students interested in costlier programmes should plan to seek additional sources of funding.

Some of the programmes below are selective and require a programme-specific application; others are registration-based. It is the student’s responsibility to manage their application to the external writing programme, meet all the deadlines and notify CIPE and the Writers’ Centre about his/her application status. Students may need to apply to some writing programmes before they have been notified about their Writing Fellowship Programme application result.

The Writing Fellowship Programme will only support external programmes and workshops that end by August 6, 2017.
